About CIPEG
The Center for Information Policy and Electronic Government (CIPEG) is a multidisciplinary research and educational center that focuses on the intersections between public policy and law, ethics, and trust as they affect the uses of information in society by individuals, organizations, and governments. Originally established in 1998 as the Center for Information Policy, CIPEG studies the convergence of policy, information, and technology in forums as diverse as emergency response, online social networks, electronic records management, and public libraries. The access, exchange, and management of information have been key recurring issues throughout history. However, in the age of the Internet, information has become the lifeblood of government, commerce, education, social interaction, and many other daily activities, and policies that frame information are more vital than ever in shaping society.
A major focus of CIPEG is the burgeoning area of electronic government (e-government) and its implications for governments and for citizens. E-government is the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies to provide government information and services, as well as channels of communication to citizens, businesses, and other governments. Ranging from simple information to complex services, e-government represents the future of governance, meriting considerable attention through scholarship and pedagogy.
CIPEG is jointly sponsored by the College of Information Studies and the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. CIPEG's advantageous location adjacent to Washington, D.C. allows us to partner with major research organizations, federal agencies, and congressionally-chartered corporations.
The University of Maryland is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the top public research university in the mid-Atlantic region and among the top 20 in the United States. Similar standings are enjoyed by our sponsoring schools where, for example, the programs in social policy and archival management are among the most respected in the nation.
